What is Rhinoplasty?

At its best, plastic surgery can transcend science and begin to resemble art. Such is the case with rhinoplasty, a nose surgery that refines your nasal bones to make your nasal septum more proportionate to the rest of your face.

At Janiga MDs, we offer several variations on the nose job, including standard, tip-only, and a rhinoplasty procedure combined with septoplasty.

Traditional rhinoplasty surgery refines bone and cartilage to make it more proportionate to the rest of the face. By contrast, a septoplasty is an internal nasal surgery performed to correct a deviated septum, focusing on the internal nasal valve which may be inhibiting your ability to breathe. This cosmetic surgery is performed primarily for medical purposes. When combined with a rhinoplasty, the two can correct common septum-related issues while also improving the overall cosmetic appearance of the nasal tissues.

Tip-only rhinoplasty refines the tip of your nose, reducing a bulbous tip or giving definition to a poorly defined tip. Because this is one of the most artistic procedures in plastic surgery, experience is crucial for achieving optimal results.

The Procedure

Dr. Timothy Janiga performs rhinoplasty using general anesthesia in a Reno-area surgery center. The procedure typically involves an incision underneath the nose and on the inside of the nose. The cartilage and bone of the nose is often reshaped. Sometimes cartilage grafts are used to improve and refine the appearance of the nasal tip and dorsum. Dr. Janiga works very closely with his patients to help you achieve your desired look.

This procedure takes approximately one to three hours with one to two hours of recovery time before leaving the surgery center.

Recovery & Results

Nasal splints are usually left in place for one week after your surgery. Once this is removed, return to work and activity is generally acceptable. Full results are expected within four to nine months.

Frequently Asked Questions about Rhinoplasty

Does your voice change after rhinoplasty?

There are no perceivable changes in a patient’s voice after nose surgery. Subtle changes may occur but these can often only be detected with a highly trained ear.

How painful is rhinoplasty?

During the rhinoplasty procedure, patients will be asleep under general anesthesia and won’t feel any pain. Mild to moderate soreness is common for a few days after surgery, but should significantly improve after 5-7 days. Pain medication and cold compresses should be used to limit swelling and discomfort.

How long does a rhinoplasty last?

Rhinoplasty permanently reshapes and restructures the nasal bone and cartilage. However, minor changes may occur as the nose and surrounding facial structures age.

What is the best age for a rhinoplasty?

Patients of all ages who are bothered by the appearance of their nose can benefit from rhinoplasty, as long as the nose is fully developed. Teenage rhinoplasty is possible, but patients are typically not younger than sixteen.

Does a rhinoplasty leave scars?

During rhinoplasty surgery, incisions will be made inside the nose or at the base of the nose in the strip of cartilage that separates the nostrils. Scars inside the nose will not be visible and scars made outside the nose will be carefully concealed and barely noticeable.
