What is a Chin Augmentation?
The chin is a crucial element in achieving an attractive, proportionate-looking face. Much like the eyes and lips, the difference a chin can make in the way that we perceive ourselves – and others – is hard to deny. Many patients choose to have facial chin augmentation either because they were born with a “weak jawline” or have developed a recessed chin with aging.
There are two ways that our plastic surgeons in Reno can perform your surgical procedure. A chin augmentation without chin implants reshapes the chin by using the patient’s own tissue to increase chin prominence. Chin implant surgery helps strengthen and increase the prominence of the chin, restoring facial harmony with balanced facial features.

The Procedure
Chin augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure in our Reno surgery center under general anesthesia. They can be performed using your own tissue or an implant. When a chin augmentation is performed with your own tissue, an incision is usually made on the inside of the mouth along the lower gum, while another incision is made under the chin. The chin bone may then be moved forward and secured into the new position, sitting more prominently forward.
Chin surgery can also be performed with implants and involves a small incision inside the mouth or outside the mouth and under the chin. This creates a pocket for the implant to be inserted in front of the chin bone and under the muscle. In each case, the surgical procedures can take up to an hour and a half with an additional hour of recovery time before leaving the Reno surgery center.
Recovery & Results
Depending on your profession and need for personal discretion, you may need to allow seven to ten days before returning to work. Swelling and bruising are to be expected for a week, and stitches also remain in for a week. During this time, you may need to wear a compression garment and eat a soft diet. Keeping your head elevated and avoiding strenuous activity will also help reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort.
Full results are expected in eight to 12 weeks. After your chin enhancement, you can expect a more prominent chin and proportioned facial features.
Frequently Asked Questions about Chin Augmentation
How long does chin implant last?
The longevity of a chin implant can depend on several factors, but with proper placement and care, it is typically considered to be a permanent solution. The materials used for chin implants are designed for durability and are often made of medical-grade silicone or polyethylene, which are both well-tolerated by the body and resistant to degradation over time. Once the implant is in place, the bodys tissues grow around it, which helps to keep it stable and secure. Although complications can occur, they are infrequent, and the implant does not typically require replacement. Its important to note that while the chin implant itself may last a lifetime, the appearance of the chin and jawline can change over the years due to factors such as aging or significant weight fluctuations. Regular follow-up with a qualified plastic surgeon can help to monitor the status of the implant and ensure the continued satisfaction with the aesthetic result.
Can you feel chin implant?
After a chin implant surgery, it is commonly reported that patients can initially feel the implant under their skin, particularly when they are talking or making facial expressions, due to the presence of the new material within the soft tissues of the chin area. Over time, as the swelling subsides and the area heals, the sensation often decreases, and the implant starts to feel like a natural part of the chin. Typically, the bodys tissues adapt around the implant, creating a more natural feeling. However, the degree to which an individual can feel the implant varies based on factors such as implant size, placement, and individual healing response. If the sensation persists or if any discomfort occurs, patients should discuss this with their plastic surgeon to ensure proper healing and implant positioning.
How are chin implants secured?
Chin implants are typically secured in place using several techniques to ensure their stability and proper position on the jawbone. Most commonly, surgeons use screws to attach the implant directly to the bone. These screws are small and specially designed not to cause discomfort while providing a firm hold. In some cases, the implant can be designed to fit snugly around the chin bone, which can provide enough stability without the need for screws. Additionally, the surrounding soft tissue also helps to keep the implant in place once it heals. The surgical technique employed depends on the individual patients needs, the surgeons preference, and the specific type of chin implant used. Chin augmentation procedures aim to achieve a natural appearance, enhancing facial harmony and balance, which is a significant goal for those seeking cosmetic improvement in the chin area.
Does chin implant help double chin?
A chin implant may not be the most effective solution for a double chin. While a chin implant can enhance the contour of your jawline and provide a more prominent and defined chin, it doesnt directly address excess fat under the chin, which is often the cause of a double chin. If a double chin is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, procedures such as liposuction or non-surgical treatments like cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) or injectable deoxycholic acid (Kybella) may be more suitable options to consider. These treatments specifically target fat cells and can reduce the appearance of a double chin by removing or shrinking them. For individuals with loose, sagging skin contributing to a double chin, a neck lift or skin-tightening procedures might be recommended instead. In some cases, a chin implant combined with these fat reduction or skin tightening treatments can create a more comprehensive aesthetic enhancement. To determine the most appropriate approach for improving the appearance of a double chin, a personalized consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon or a dermatologist who specializes in aesthetic procedures is essential.
Can a chin implant improve jawline?
Yes, a chin implant can significantly improve the appearance of your jawline. A chin implant, also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the contours of your chin, neck, and jawline. By increasing the projection of the chin, it can create a more balanced facial profile and strengthen the jawline. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who feel their chin is weak or recedes, which can make the jawline appear undefined. The added structure to the lower face can result in a more defined and aesthetically pleasing jawline. Moreover, when a chin implant is combined with other procedures, like liposuction or a neck lift, the enhancement of the jawline can be even more pronounced, leading to a sharper, more sculpted look.
