What is Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is a minimally scarring surgical procedure that removes the body’s excess fat, modifying its contour and shape. Not only does this procedure remove fat cells from targeted areas of the body, it also results in skin tightening.

Tumescent liposuction is a technique that targets fat cells prior to being removed. This procedure was designed to help reduce bleeding during the removal process and to also promote a quicker recovery time. Tumescent liposuction is ideal for patients who have experienced significant weight loss or gain, as well as women who have recently given birth.

The Procedure

Tumescent liposuction is performed in an outpatient surgery center for larger areas or our Reno/Tahoe offices for smaller areas. During the procedure, a fluid containing local anesthetic and epinephrine is injected into the targeted fat tissue, shrinking the capillaries to decrease bleeding. Finally, the fat is removed through suctioning.

Procedure times may vary depending on the number and size of areas being targeted.

Recovery & Results

Swelling and bruising are to be expected and may take two to three weeks to subside. Dr. Timothy Janiga recommends patients take at least a week off from work and their regular routine in order to recover. Strenuous activities, such as heavy exercise, should be avoided for two to three weeks.

Most patients will see full results after six months, while continuing to see improvements up to a year.
