What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a body contouring and fat removal procedure that harvests excess unwanted fat to modify the body’s contour and shape. Dr. Timothy Janiga offers two options: standard and radio-frequency assisted liposuction (RFAL), which is used in procedures such as BodyTite.
THE LIPOSUCTION (LIPOSCULPTURE) PROCEDURE
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Tim Janiga performs liposuction surgery in a Reno outpatient surgery center for larger areas or the office procedure suite with sedation or local anesthesia for smaller areas. The excess fat is harvested with a cannula through small port sites. The most common areas for liposuction are the flanks, abdomen, or thighs. Liposuction is also often combined with tummy tuck surgery to achieve a flat, toned abdomen.
Not only does this surgical procedure remove fat cells from targeted areas of the body, it also helps guide skin retraction after removal, reducing the amount of loose skin. Liposuction is ideal for patients who have areas of fatty tissue that cosmetically are bothersome. Liposuction procedure times can range from one to four hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Recovery time varies based on how large of an area is treated and how much fat is removed and can range from two to seven days. You should avoid strenuous activity for approximately two weeks and wear the compression garment we provide you.
RADIO-FREQUENCY ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION OR RFAL (BODYTITE)
Radio-frequency assisted liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes the body’s excess fat, tightens skin, and modifies body’s contour and shape. Not only does this procedure remove fat cells from targeted areas of the body, it also results in skin tightening that is greater than liposuction alone.
RADIO-FREQUENCY ASSISTED LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
RFAL is performed in an outpatient surgery center for larger areas or our Reno/Tahoe offices for smaller areas. During the procedure, a fluid containing local anesthetic is injected into the targeted stubborn fat tissue, the radio-frequency device passes through the port site to tighten the overlying excess skin and heat the fat underneath. Finally, the fat is then removed with a suction cannula through the same port sites as the radio-frequency was administered.
Procedure times may vary depending on the number and size of areas being targeted. Recovery is similar to that of standard liposuction.

RECOVERY & RESULTS
For both standard and radio-frequency assisted liposuction, swelling and bruising are to be expected and may take two to three weeks to subside, while minimal swelling may persist for several months. Strenuous activities such as heavy exercise should be avoided for two to three weeks.
Most patients will see full results after three months, while continuing to see improvements is skin tightening and contraction for up to a year. To maintain your results, you’ll want to stick to a healthy diet and exercise routine.
