What is a Chemical Peel?
In our teenage years through our early 30’s, our skin cells regenerate and turn over very quickly. This gives that youthful, healthy, dewy glow that the young are blessed with. As we get into our mid-thirties, this cell turnover starts to slow down. With this slowdown of cell turnover, the old, dead skin stays on top of our epidermis layer and leads to an aged, dull appearance.
To reinvigorate the fresh face that you once had, Janiga MDs offers chemical peel treatments. Chemical peels penetrate the epidermis and shed off the old skin to expose the healthy skin underneath. This helps achieve a smoother tone and texture, and to bring back that glow. Plus, chemical peels work to stimulate natural collagen production and cellular turnover, which leads to the tightening and reduction of fine lines over time.
Chemical peels can be customized to suit your individual needs. In-office chemical peels range from light depth to medium peels. Light peels include glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and pyruvic acid and treat conditions such as fine wrinkles, dull texture, brown spots, uneven skin tone, and acne. Light peels have little downtime and peel lightly for only a few days after. A medium peel can include combination peels, Jessners, TCA, and others to stimulate collagen, smooth texture irregularities, and can help with mild to moderate pigment problems and acne scarring. Medium chemical peels have a longer recovery time of 3-5 days of peeling. Medium depth peels affect more change and involve more chemical peeling than light peels but can have a longer recovery. A medium chemical peel is great for wrinkles, rough skin, brown spots, texture irregularities, can remove damaged skin cells, address acne scarring, as well as give a nice tightening of the skin.
Conditions that benefit from chemical peels include dull, dry skin, acne, freckling, blotchy pigmentation, sun damage, fine wrinkles, and shallow acne scars.

The Procedure
Before deciding if you are right for a chemical peel, your provider will examine your skin and discuss the potential benefits and risks for your particular skin type and condition.
Peels are performed as an outpatient procedure in Janiga MD’s Reno office, and usually do not exceed 30 minutes while the chosen solution is applied to your skin. This is usually associated with two or three minutes of stinging sensation.
Recovery & Results
Depending on the type of peel you have, be it light or medium depth, your recovery will range from a few days to a week. The treated skin can appear red in color before it begins peeling. The deeper the peel you have, the more obvious your post-treatment peeling will be. If you have had a medium depth peel and require more social discretion, you may want to stay home until you’ve finished healing, but you are able to work on the phone or computer right away.
Although one chemical peel can significantly improve the appearance of the skin, some skin problems are deeper than others. It is likely that you may require more than one peel to achieve your best results and peels are usually done as a series of four treatments.
