Why Is Sunscreen Important?
Daily sunscreen wear is important first and foremost because it protects the skin from the dangers of sunburn and skin cancer. Most people think of sunscreen as a product that’s only important during the summer months or at the beach, but harmful UVA and UVB rays are present year-round. Consistent exposure to the sun increases your likelihood of developing skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in the United States.
In addition to these risks, sun exposure accelerates signs of aging and skin discoloration. Frequent sun exposure without proper sunscreen use can cause discoloration, such as brown and red spots, and worsens the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines due to the breakdown of collagen from the sun. This is known as photoaging.
The message is getting out there, but here at Janiga MDs we wanted to reinforce it with you: sunscreen should be a part of your daily skincare regimen, even during the winter months. Dr. Jennifer Janiga recommends wearing a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher each day, and this is especially important in a climate such as Reno, which is both sunny year-round and at a high elevation. Find one you love and be sure to wear it every day. Our medical spa offers and recommends the following sunscreen products:
- SkinMedica®, which offers a range of sun-protective products from SPF 30-50+, including serums, traditional sunscreens, and tinted sunscreen.
- SkinCeuticals®, a line of sunscreens at varying SPF factors with a focus on anti-aging properties.
- TIZO®, which prevents aging signs and sun damage using titanium and zinc oxide rather than chemical sunscreen agents for those that prefer a chemical free sunscreen.
- EltaMD®, a line of sunscreen products designed with acne, rosacea and sensitive skin in mind and widely used by medical professionals.
Where Should I Apply Sunscreen?
Dr. Janiga recommends that you apply specialized facial sunscreen to your face, neck, and any parts of your chest that are exposed for any length of time, especially when daily. Most of the sunscreens we offer are designed with these areas in mind.
If you have questions or concerns about any of the sunscreen products offered and how they may impact your skin, you can discuss your questions with our trained skincare team.
