What is Juvéderm®?
As we get older, the building blocks that make up the face start to deplete. This can result in volume loss, hollowing, and wrinkles, including highly visible ones around the mouth, nose and cheeks. Juvéderm® is an injectable that restores the face’s natural contours with a short office visit.
Juvéderm® injections have enjoyed approval from the FDA since June of 2006, which has allowed providers like Dr. Jennifer J. Janiga, MD, FAAD, and her associates to easily and safely combat the visible signs of aging and hold off more involved procedures for years.
Juvéderm® makes two main forms, the regular Juvéderm® and the VOL type products. The VOL products include Volbella, Vollure and Voluma. The regular Juvéderm® products include Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus.
Juvéderm® Ultra is the thinnest of the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers by Allergan and is approved by the FDA for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds and is commonly used for fine lines, lip augmentation and other treatments. A skin test is not required prior to the use of any of the Juvéderm® family of products, because hyaluronic acid is a normal part of the skin, reducing the possibility of an allergic reaction.
A medium thickness injectable, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is another way to help patients see renewal of the face’s natural contours in a short office visit. Dr. Jennifer Janiga or her associates will select the correct product based on the area that you would like to treat and the type of skin that you have for best results.
The Procedure
On the day of your appointment, we will apply a topical numbing medication to the desired treatment area. Once the medication has set for at least 30 minutes, the treatment will begin.
All dermal fillers, including Juvéderm® Ultra and Ultra Plus, must be injected under the skin. Most formulas of Juvéderm® contain a small amount of numbing medication which helps alleviate any discomfort from the injection.
Juvéderm® appointment lengths vary depending on the number of treated areas, though the appointment should last no longer than 30-60 minutes.
Results & Recovery
Minimal bruising is normal with any skin fillers or facial injections, including Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus. Bruising may last from three days up to seven days depending on the size of the bruises as well as an individual’s healing rate. There will be some redness and swelling for up to three days. Mild discomfort may remain in the area for a day or two and can be relieved with your normal over-the-counter pain relievers.
Juvéderm® treatment results last between six and 12 months depending on the treated area.
