Migraines: Relief an Unexpected Benefit of Brow Lift Surgery
Migraines Relieved by Plastic Surgery Procedure
People who suffer from debilitating migraine headaches have historically had to rely on drugs to ease their pain, but there is a newer option for migraine relief. In studies undertaken from 2000 to the present and reported on in issues of “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®”, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), it has been reported that, after certain types of brow lift (aka forehead lift) surgery, migraine relief has been an unexpected byproduct. In one study, headaches were completely eliminated in about 30 percent of patients, with a significant decrease in migraine occurrence in 59%.
Migraine Relief Due to Plastic Surgery is Long Lasting
There are “trigger sites” in the muscles or nerves of the forehead, which set off or amplify migraines. By removing the muscles in that area via a brow lift, frontal migraines attacks starting in the forehead were reduced because of the relief of pressure on the nerves responsible for triggering migraines.
In a 5 year follow-up with patients after brow lift surgery, close to 90% of the patients who had suffered from migraines continued to experience at least partial relief.
Researchers found that the brow lift procedure reduced the frequency (from 11 to four per month), duration (from 34 to eight hours), and intensity of migraines, and that the benefits lasted over time. Overall there was an increased quality of life and no reported side effects.
