What is a Chemical Peel and How Does it Benefit Your Skin?

What is a Chemical Peel and How Does it Benefit Your Skin?

Many patients struggle with the texture of their skin, whether this is due to aging signs or issues like acne scars. A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to improve the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. Chemical peels can be used on the face, neck, chest,  and hands. A chemical peel treatment is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin.

Who Can Benefit from a Chemical Peel?

Anyone with sun exposure, acne, or who feel his or her skin is showing the appearance of age like uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred skin. Chemical peels are non-invasive and safe to use for a wide range of clients. There are many types of chemical peels available as well, meaning that your service can be tailored to your skin type and needs.

Types of Chemical Peels

A few of the most common peeling solutions are Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid.

  • Lactic Acid is the gentlest of peels. This is a great starter peel that improves texture, softens the appearance of fine wrinkles, and reduces brown spots with minimal to no side effects.
  • Glycolic Peels are beneficial for most  skin types with many levels of intensity, no downtime, and no heavy peeling. This solution enables us to work with treating surface imperfections and suppleness, resulting in a radiant, smoother and brighter skin tone.
  • Salicylic Acid is the most successful peel for treating acne prone skin, excessive oils,  and clogged pores. This solution has a dual opportunity for killing bacteria and exfoliating the top layer of skin to expedite the process of cell turnover. This makes for home care products to penetrate deeper and create better results.

What Happens After a Chemical Peel?

The recovery period after your chemical peel will vary depending on the type of peel you have had. Gentler peels will require no downtime, but you should take care to avoid excess sun exposure and follow all directions to protect your skin after your treatment. Deeper chemical peels can cause swelling and redness for 2-7 days after treatment, so patients will have some downtime. During a consultation, Dr. Janiga or her associates will explain what you can expect from the type of chemical peel you receive.
